As you may already know if you are a regular reader of Rarely Wears Lipstick, LELO pleasure objects are unlike most other sex toys. Well, this review is going to be slightly different to the others I have written for this brand because their Smart Wands are quite unlike any other LELO product in that… well, they’re technically not sex toys. Most vibrators that bill themselves as massagers are doing so with a bit of a “nudge nudge wink wink”, but this is not a sex toy disguised as a personal massager. Smart Wands are actually designed to soothe your aching muscles. Hold back on the sarcastic responses for a moment while you pop over to Wikipedia and search for Hitachi Magic Wand – now imagine that style of vibrator, produced by LELO. Elegant design, waterproof, rechargeable all whilst providing a powerful massage. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it?
LELO Smart Wands claim to be more powerful than any other rechargeable massager on the market – “bringing soothing spa-level relaxation straight into the home” – so I was thrilled to be offered the chance to review one. Especially seeing as the last wand-style vibrator I tested had a disappointingly short power cable. The smooth silicone massager arrived discreetly wrapped from Lovehoney and the packaging was as sleek as ever, although the Smart Wand comes in a white spa-like box rather than the black ones that the pleasure objects come in. As well as the massager, the box contained a charger, instruction book and storage pouch. Plus a brooch, in case you, er… want to identify yourself to other LELO users on the street.
After a couple of hours charging, the Smart Wand was ready to use, and it was extremely easy to operate. So easy that I only needed a very quick read of the tiny instruction book in order to pick up the basics. The ‘plus’ and ‘minus’ buttons are used to switch the wand on and off, and to increase or decrease the intensity of the vibrations. The button in between those two changes the vibration setting – hold this down for five seconds and you get to experience the SenseTouch mode, featuring sensors “that allow vibration strength to build as soon as the wand tip comes into contact with the body, creating the most professional massage technique that works intuitively with your body and your needs”. Bold claims, but ones that my (now no longer aching) shoulders can assure you are not without foundation. It was easy to get into and out of this setting – the light flashes when you’ve held the button down for long enough – and the fact that the vibrations quietened to a whisper when not in contact with the body is definitely a bonus. Not that the motor is noisy anyway. This is an extremely quiet toy for its size!
The other feature worth noting is the curved handle of the Smart Wand is absolutely perfect for reaching your own back and shoulders, so you don’t even need to have assistance for the perfect massage. This is somewhat irrelevant if you use it to ‘massage’ more intimate areas, but it’s not like the shape gets in the way of that at all. If you’re using your Smart Wand as a sex toy, I suspect its good looks will matter for mere seconds before the vibrations start to work their magic. It even has a travel lock function so that it doesn’t accidentally switch on in your luggage. Handy.
Aside from just how long it holds its charge – mine has yet to run for the two hours that a full charge lasts – the only feature I have yet to test is its claim of being fully waterproof, which I was at first rather hesitant to attempt. However, as all LELO Smart Wands come with a full 1 year warranty and 10 year quality guarantee, I don’t think I should really be so cautious! This is a wonderful massager with a great many uses, and it really does open up a whole world of relaxation to those of us who don’t have a partner who is a professional massage therapist. It comes in two sizes – large and medium – and each has three colour options (all pictured above), so the only problem might be deciding which one to go for.
